Darjeeling will walk with Bengal, Mamata: GJM
Kolkata : In a significant development that could go in favour of Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s ‘managerial skills as a politician’, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha representatives who attended the Trinamool Congress rally on Saturday indicated at suspending their demand for a separate Gorkhaland “till Mamata Banerjee is the Chief Minister of Bengal.” Senior GJM leader and party MLA Harka Bahadur Chetri declared from the Saturday’s Trinamool rally that “Darjeeling will walk alongside rest of Bengal in grief and happiness and will continue to do so till Mamata Banerjee is the Chief Minister,” adding no Minister “let alone a Chief Minister ever visited the Gorkha region during the Left regime to share our grief but Mamata Didi did so on plenty of occasions in the past one year time.”
Banerjee earlier withdrew her party candidates from the GTA elections, which has already been won unopposed by the GJM. The Chief Minister is credited with solving the vexed Darjeeling issue when she signed the GTA accord after coming to power last year. The declaration of Chetri is considered politically significant indicating GJM’s dilution of hardline stance on a separate Gorkhaland State.
