GNLF announces Agitation in Darjeeling Hills

PTI
Darjeeling : The Gorkha National Liberation Front has announced launching of a mass agitation for inclusion of Darjeeling Hills in the sixth schedule of the Constitution, a move which has been opposed by Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM). GNLF leader Bhim Bahadur told PTI today that the course of agitation would be decided upon by the party top leadership in February. The demand by GNLF, which was in power in autonomous Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council(DGHC) since the signing of the accord in 1988 till 2007, was made again after a gap of several months. Arjun Rai, the Mirik branch convenor of the party had told newsmen at Kurseong yesterday that the agitation would be launched in February and a huge rally would be organised at Mirik in February end.

Reacting to it, GJM spokesman and Kalimpong MLA Harka Bahadur Chetri said the Hill people had already rejected the demand. "The demand has also been rejected by Parliament as it does not cover majority of the Hills population. "They (GNLF leaders) should understand that the people of the Hills are aware of GNLF's nature ... They have never solved any problems in the Hills and created many instead," he said, adding there are over 6,000 casual workers in DGHC due to GNLF's administrative failure. The agreement to set up Gorkhaland Territorial Administration to replace caretaker DGHC, as demanded by GJM and signed in the presence of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on July 18 last year, is set to expire on January 18.
