Darjeeling : With the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha agreeing to hold elections in the Darjeeling hills to the new hill council, Gorkha Territorial Administration, party leaders in the Terai and Dooars have been briefed about the move. At a meeting yesterday, GJM chief Bimal Gurung and party general secretary Roshan Giri briefed the leaders in the Terai and Dooars about the meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on March 24 where agreement was reached for holding elections in the hills.

A GJM leader said that Gurung and Giri asked for utmost restraint as the situation regarding the demand for inclusion of Gorkha dominated areas in the Dooars and Terai in the GTA as demanded by the party has reached a sensitive stage. The Justice (retd) Shyamal Sen Committee constituted by the state government to go into the demand by the GJM for the inclusion of Gorkha-dominated areas in the Terai and Dooars would submit its report in June-July, Giri said. He said that elections would be held to 45 constituences after 16 moujas were added to the existing areas of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, the outgoing hill council.
