Accused in Tamang murder case is GJM candidate for GTA polls
DARJEELING: An accused in the murder of prominent political leader Madan Tamang in Darjeeling more than two years ago has been nominated by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) as a candidate for the elections to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). Dipen Maley, who is in judicial custody in connection, will be the GJM candidate from the Pokhriabong-Chamong constituency, it was announced in Darjeeling on Monday.
The GJM leadership claimed that Mr. Maley, a leader of the Gorkha Janmukti Yuva Morcha, is innocent and charged falsely. He was arrested from the Pokhriabong area of Darjeeling sub-division almost a year after Mr. Tamang was hacked to death in Darjeeling on May 21, 2010. “This is shocking,” Bharati Tamang, wife of the slain leader and president of the Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL), told The Hindu over the telephone from Darjeeling on hearing of Mr. Maley’s nomination.
“It only proves that it was the GJM that was responsible for my husband’s murder,” she said. The ABGL is among the local political groupings in the hills that are opposed to the GJM. Mr. Tamang was its president when he was murdered while overseeing arrangements for a party rally in the heart of Darjeeling. Mr. Maley’s name as a party nominee for the July 29 GTA polls, was the first to be announced by the GJM.
GJM president Bimal Gurung is expected to announce the names of the party’s 21 other candidates from Darjeeling sub-division on Tuesday in Kalimpong. The polls will be held in 45 constituencies spread across the threesubdivisions of Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong. The GJM has decided to contest from all the constituencies.
