Lieutenant General Mr. Shakti Gurung, UYSM, AVSM, VSMA completed his schooling from Cambrian Hall Dehradun and is a alumni of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. He was commissioned into the 15 Battalion of the Grenadiers Regiment on 15th Jun 1975. During his long service career, he has held a variety of sterling and balanced portfolio of important command staff and instructional assignments at all levels in the Indian Army and has attended various courses of instructions that include Junior Command, Defence Service Staff College, Senior command, Higher Command and National Defence College.
The General Officer has served as instr CI C at Inf School, Mhow and also in numerous prestigious staff appointments to include Brigade Major in an Inf Dde, Assistant Military Secretary (2C) in MS Branch at Army Headquarters and Secretary, Chief of Staff Committee (COSC) at HQ IDS. He has also served as Defence Attachee at Embassy of India in Myanmar. Previous to his present appointment, the General Officer has commanded 21 GRENADIERS in Assam, an Infantry Brigade in Op Rakshak (J&K) , and a MOUNTAIN Division in UNTAIN Division in Op Rhino/Op Hifazat in the state of Manipur, 4 Corps in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Before taking over the command of 4 Crops the General Officer was additional Military Secretary (A) in Army Headquarters.
He has been awarded with Visihisht Seva Medal while posted at IDS, Ati Visisht Seva Medal while comminding a Division, Uttam Visihisht Seva Medal while commanding a Crops. The General Officer is an M.Sc in Defence Studies from Madras University 1988 and double M Phil from Ahilyabai University, Indore 1999 and Madras University 2006. Apart from an extremely successful Army Carrer, the General Officer is also a keen sportsman and plays golf, cricket and volleyball. The General officer is married to Mrs Madhu Gurung who is a media professional and they have two sons, Maj Sidharth Gurung, 21 GRENADIERS and Mr, Shaurya Karanbir Gurung.
