Landslides affecting life in Darjeeling

Darjeeling . Frequent landslides in West Bengal have blocked national highways and rail tracks, disrupting daily life in the state.Nearly two months after a massive landslide came crashing down on a stretch of the National Highway 55, which connects Darjeeling District with the rest of the country, authorities still have not repaired the damage.Residents say this has hindered their daily life as the highway was vital for their livelihoods.

"This road is considered to be a lifeline through which we earn our daily bread. All the vehicles including the buses used to pass through this road. The bus fare has also increased. They ask for Rs 50 to Rs 60. A landslide took place on October 28 and none of the officials have come to this place," said Niraj Bramman, a resident.

The lack of attention to the state's infrastructure has also hit the tourism sector with more and more shops and local businesses being forced to shut down."The government is paying no heed to our queries. Mamata Banerjee had said earlier that she will make this place like Switzerland but they are not able to make proper roads, how will they be able to make it Switzerland? People are facing lots of problems to commute to Kerseong for business," said Bikram Kumar, a resident.
