Gurkhas protest in 10 Downing Street for Equal pension
LONDON : Veteran Gurkhas have staged a protest outside 10 Downing Street against "unfair" military pensions. Gurkhas who retired before 1997 get about a third of the pension received by their British former comrades. There are 10,000 Gurkha veterans living in the UK, the majority in Hampshire and Berkshire. A spokesman for the Gurkha Welfare Trust said many of the retired soldiers would return to Nepal if they received the full pension. One in 10 of Aldershot's 90,000 residents is Nepalese after Gurkhas were allowed to settle in the UK. United British Gurkhas Ex-Servicemen’s Association yesterday collected 1, 11,000 signatures from the public and submitted them to the British prime minister’s office with a five-point demand. It is learnt that the Gurkha veterans were protesting against the unfair military pensions since 1995.
