GJM wins all 45 seats in Darjeeling Hills
Darjeeling : The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) has won all the 45 seats in the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) Sabha on Thursday. Interestingly, all the seats the GJM has won unopposed. The newly constructed GTA Sabha will take oath on Saturday and the chief minister Mamata Banerjee will attend the oath-taking function. Darjeeling will witness a new era under GJM leadership and the newly formed GTA Sabha will play a crucial role in carrying out development activities in the Hills.
The elections to the GTA Sabha were held on July 29. Before the elections, the GJM under the leadership of Bimal Gurung had won 28 of the total 45 seats unopposed as the CPIM had withdrawn all its 13 candidates. The CPIM leader in Darjeeling district and former municipal affairs minister Ashok Bhattacharjee had alleged of terror and threats unleashed by the GJM workers on them following which they had to withdraw all their candidates.
Trinamool Congress had also fielded 17 candidates in Darjeeling hills. But the chief minister Mamata Banerjee had announced in her July 21 rally in Kolkata that she will withdraw all her candidates from the fray for the GTA Sabha polls. Following Mamata's announcement, GJM had automatically won all the 45 seats unopposed. In fact, the newly formed GTA Sabha will not have any opposition member and political circles here feel that this ""more than absolute majority"" will help the GJM leadership to function independently.
Immediately after their victory, the GJM top boss Bimal Gurung had visted Kolkata last Tuesday and met Mamata Banerjee at Writers' Buildings. Gurung has invited Mamata to attend their oath-taking ceremony in Darjeeling on August 4 and Mamata has agreed to rush to the Hills.
