Schools Could re-open from September in Darjeeling

KURSEONG : Even as a series of strategic ploys are being adopted by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha to pressurise the government, talk about schools in the Hills functioning normally from September is gaining prominence. Around the end of July, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung had appealed to all boarding students to leave for home by August 2 as the Gorkhaland agitation would intensify. Accordingly, almost all such students have left for home as there was a total shutdown of schools even during the bandh relaxation periods. Since then, the GJM has launched several agitation programmes with support from other political and apolitical organisations. However, no official announcement has been made regarding the actual date of resumption of school curriculum.
GJM Study Forum member Binod Prakash Sharma, who was present in the all party meeting on Sunday, said the restoration of education in the Hills was discussed and accordingly, schools may operate in a full-fledged manner from the month of September. Meanwhile, Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee chairman Enos Das Pradhan said the committee is equally concerned about students as they are the future. “We have discussed the matter during all the three meetings of the GJAC. We will soon announce the normal resumption of all educational institutions in the Hills and at the same time appeal to the state government to change their attitude by withdrawing the CRPF from school compounds where they are presently camped.”
